The works should keep the viewer in motion — thereby he does not rest and is limited to only one perspective.
The three-dimensional works by the German artist Jo Schöpfer move at the interface between sculpture and architecture and are reminiscent of steel skeleton models from architecture. With patinated bronze and anodized aluminum panels, Schöpfer builds transparent bodies and light compositions obeying to a clear formal language committed to ‘minimal art’. Mass and material as well as space and volume interact as exposed or enclosing elements in such a way that we can only grasp the diversity and power of the works by shifting our point of view.
A substantial part of Schöpfers’ work, are the watercolors on paper, small delicate studies of forms and architectural structures. Independent of the sculptures, they unfold an incredible presence, placed within the generous space of the sheet, attracting our full attention.
2017 works by Jo Schöpfer were shown for the first time at the Galerie Wenger.
