MARK WILLIAMS

*1950

I make abstract, nonrepresentational art. My compositions are asymmetrical geometric rhythms. The asymmetry creates a sense of movement, transition, and the element of time. Though my art is reductive, my surfaces are painterly.

New York artist Mark Williams arranges and composes abstract, geometric pictorial worlds by means of layers and fragments. The interplay of clear order and relaxed devotion is characteristic of his work. By using squeegee and adhesive tape, he juxtaposes blurred elements with precise edges. Lines become blurred, saturated colors change to thin applications of paint. The horizontally organized paintings, mostly acrylic on canvas, also oil and enamel on wood or paper are determined by a limited color palette. However, additional color nuances are formed by overlapping. Layers expand, appear translucent and simulate the depth of a picture.

In 2013 works by Mark Williams were exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Wenger.
