SOPHIE SMALLHORN

*1971

I like to play with the endless possibilities of colour.

Besides being an artist, British artist Sophie Smallhorn is also known as a color consultant. She loves colors – playing skillfully with their effects. Fascinated by the almost infinite possibilities and variations, she unpacks her color studies into simple, abstract and three-dimensional works. She describes her work as “almost always formal, angular, graphic, almost architectural in their aesthetics.”
Even though working with color is often an intuitive process, a well thought-out and precise approach can clearly be recognized in Smallhorn’s works. The artist always succeeds in maintaining the tension between order and chaos, balance and imbalance, perspective and the addition or subtraction of space. This becomes visible in her three-dimensional works, for example the „Cubes“. Her work explores the relationships between color, volume and proportion.

In 2014 works by Sophie Smallhorn has been shown at Galerie Wenger.
